About affordable housing

Affordable housing is a term used to describe homes provided at below market prices for those without the means to enter the housing market conventionally. The main forms of affordable housing are social rent, affordable rent, and intermediate housing for sale.

  • Social rent / affordable rent - affordable homes to rent are usually managed by housing associations, known as Registered Providers, and advertised and allocated through the Cumbria Choice Based Lettings scheme;

  • Low cost or 'intermediate' home ownership tenures - aimed at helping local people on modest incomes to buy their own home. The most common intermediate tenures are discounted sale, shared ownership, or shared equity.
