What is a hate crime?

A hate crime or incident is a motivated by prejudice and can involve violence. Victims become targets due to a disability, their race, religion, beliefs, sexual orientation or gender identity. Anyone can be a victim of a hate crime or incident.

If you think that an event, however minor, shows hatred towards a person because of their disability, race, religion, sexual orientation or gender identity, you should report it.

How can I report hate crime?

  • Tell a Police Officer.

  • Call Cumbria Police on 101.

  • Text phone Cumbria Police 18001 101 for deaf, hearing or speech impaired.

  • Telephone 999 always in an emergency.

Use the hate crime reporting form on the Cumbria Constabulary.

Anyone can report a hate crime whether you are the victim, a witness, or third party. You can even remain anonymous, but please don't ignore it, don't accept it, report it!
