Contaminated Land Strategy

We have produced a Contaminated Land Inspection Strategy (PDF: 1.45Mb / 75 pages) in accordance with Part IIA of the Environmental Protection Act 1990. It describes how we will identify and prioritise sites for further investigation.

Our Contaminated Land Officer deals with issues arising from possible land contamination. If contamination on a site is assessed as potentially posing a significant risk to human health or the environment then we will secure remediation for it. Depending on the individual circumstances of a site the funding for remediation could come from the original polluter, the current landowner or us through an application for grant funding from Department for Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) .

In 2012, the Government revised the Statutory Guidance for contaminated land which tells us how to interpret this legislation. We are currently reviewing our contaminated land strategy.
