How do I apply for the discount?
We have a list of properties which we know have been flooded. We will apply the discount automatically to these properties and therefore you do not need to do anything. If you feel you have been missed, or have any enquiries, please call 01768 810067 or email firstname.lastname@example.org
What is a flooded property?
A flooded property is a property that has been flooded internally, which means water has entered the property.
My basement was flooded. Am I entitled to the discount?
Yes, basements and below ground level are included.
My garage was flooded. Am I entitled to the discount?
Garages are included if they are in the fabric of the building. Garages adjacent or separate from the main building are not included.
I live in a caravan. Am I entitled to the discount?
Yes. The discount includes caravans and park homes, but not tents.
What discount do I receive while my property is unoccupied?
A 100% discount applies to properties that have been rendered uninhabitable due to the flooding. This discount will apply for the period the property remains unoccupied and uninhabitable. The discount will last for a minimum period of 3 months after which it will cease on reoccupation.
I am living upstairs. What discount am I entitled to?
Residents who have remained in the property, but occupation of the whole property is limited by flood damage, will be entitled to 100% discount for a minimum period of 3 months. If the property remains partly occupied and uninhabitable, the discount can continue for a maximum period of 12 months. However, the discount will end once the whole property is reoccupied.
What if my home is an upstairs flat and I wasn't able to access my home because the ground floor was flooded?
If you had to leave your home for more than 24 hours due to the access being restricted by flooding, the discount will apply.
What if this is my second home?
A 100% discount will apply for a minimum period of 3 months. After 3 months the discount will cease if the property is habitable. If the property remains unoccupied and uninhabitable the discount can apply for up to 6 months.
What if my property was empty at the time of the flooding?
A 100% discount will apply for a minimum period of 3 months. After 3 months the discount will cease if the property is habitable. If the property remains unoccupied and partly uninhabitable the discount can apply for up to 6 months
I have moved into temporary accommodation, will I need to pay Council Tax there?
If you move into temporary accommodation because of the flooding, 100% discount will be available on that accommodation for up to 12 months, provided you are liable to pay the Council Tax on that address and it remains your intention to return to the flooded property.
If I move in with friends or relatives whilst my property is being repaired, will this affect their Council Tax?
As long as you intend to return to the flooded property and are receiving the discount on the flooded property we will not class you as resident with your family or friends and any discounts or housing benefit they receive will not be affected.
Where the tenancy ends due to flooding, what does the landlord get?
The landlord can get the discount up to a maximum of the 12 month discount from the date of the flooding. (This is because the property was occupied at the time of the flooding).
Where the tenancy on the flooded property ends, how is the tenant's new property treated?
The tenant's sole or main residence will be classed as the new property only after 3 months from the original flooding incident. Therefore, the entitlement to discount on the new property will cease at this point in time (3 months after the initial flooding at their original property).
What happens where the tenants move into another property with family or friends and the tenancy on the flooded property ends?
After 3 months from the initial flooding incident, the family or friends' property is treated as the tenants' sole or main residence and any entitlement to discounts and housing benefit will be reassessed taking into account the change in circumstances.
£500 flood funding
What are the £500 payments?
The Government is providing local authorities with Community Grants. This is equivalent to up to £500 per household affected by flooding. It will help with recovery costs, such as provision of temporary accommodation.
How will I receive this payment?
If you pay for your Council Tax by direct debit, or have informed us that you have been flooded, you will receive this payment automatically, so you do not need to do anything. What if I have moved to another address?
If you have moved to another property, or are still living in your flood-affected property, please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org, or call 01768 817817 to ensure we have your details, if you have not already done so.
