Free swims and gym sessions to celebrate Appleby Leisure Centre reopening
Appleby residents are to be offered free swimming and gym sessions next month following the closure of the Leisure Centre for a major refurbishment.
Eden District Council now plans to reopen Appleby Leisure Centre on September 30th following the £150,000 refurbishment. The date has had to be pushed back due to issues with drainage on the site which were discovered during the refurbishment.
To celebrate the completion of the work - which includes the modernisation of the changing facilities and viewing area - all Appleby residents are being offered one free swim or gym session during October.
Doug Huggon, the council's leisure and community services manager, said: "It was regrettable that we had to close the facility during the summer holidays, while we are sorry for the inconvenience caused by the closure, I am sure that once people see the work that has been done they will be pleased we have been able to carry out this work.
“There is no good time to close a leisure centre, but we will be able to resume swimming lessons and all our usual activities with the benefit of a spacious and contemporary changing village.”
“We wanted to say thank you to everybody for their understanding support and offering free swims and gym sessions for residents seemed the perfect way to do it.
“We also have some promotional offers and support for gym members and clubs on their first month back with the leisure centre,” he added.
Councillor Lissie Sharp, Eden’s portfolio holder for communities, said: “It’s pleasing that we have been able to make this substantial investment in Appleby’s leisure facilities to allow improvements and essential works to take place. We appreciate people’s patience in waiting for this work to be completed and hope these offers go some way towards compensating for the disruption.”
Facility members, Swim School and other user groups of the facility are being contacted directly by the centre with reopening and booking details.
The leisure centre and pool, which opened in 1995, attracts more than 45,000 visitors each year and is popular with schools, residents and visitors.
During the refurbishment, the viewing area was modernised to create a clean, warm and visible place to watch the pool events.
The changing village will feel more spacious as block walls are replaced with hygienic cubicle panelling and a new lighting scheme. Accessible changing and washroom facilities will be complemented with a new vanity area. And new £1 coin return lockers will be larger and more accessible.
The leisure centre is scheduled to reopen on Monday 30 September 2019 at 9am.
