Final call for Eden business grant applications - £1.5m remains unclaimed

The UK Government has confirmed that the deadline for payments from the Small Business Grants and Retail, Hospitality and Leisure grants is Wednesday 30 September 2020.

Considering this, the deadline for applications to Eden District Council for these grants has been announced as Friday 28 August 2020. Applications after this time cannot be guaranteed to be processed in time.

Although the Council has contacted organisations directly where possible, there are still a number of organisations yet to claim the grant funds. At the time of writing, over £1.5m in cash grants remains unclaimed by dozens of firms in Eden.

If left unclaimed, this funding to help the local area will have to be returned to the Government.

Leader of Eden District Council, Councillor Virginia Taylor, urged businesses to take advantage of the schemes, stating: "this is a very rare opportunity for organisations to claim cash grants from the Government which don't need to be paid back.

If you are an Eden business, I urge you to check your eligibility online and register your details. The process isn’t automatic. It's impossible for the Council to pay out these grants unless businesses provide their bank details," she said.

Organisations must submit their details through the online portal at www.eden.gov.uk for the Small Business Grant and expanded Retail, Hospitality and Leisure Grant schemes. These schemes offer £10,000 or £25,000 for eligible businesses.

Councillor Taylor continued, "some businesses and organisations may not realise they are eligible for these grants. The word business might throw some off. These schemes can apply to village halls, holiday homes, markets, self-catering accommodation, sports grounds and stately homes. It really is that varied, so please do check your eligibility online or give the Council a call.

The common saying is when it sounds too good to be true, it normally is; but in this case it definitely is true. The government is offering five-figure cash grants that you don’t need to pay back. If you are sceptical, visit www.eden.gov.uk and follow the steps online or call us on 01768 817817 about your grant eligibility."

If these funds remain unclaimed, they will disappear - along with the opportunity to help the local people and economy here in Eden." Councillor Taylor concluded.
