Create to Connect Eden

Eden District Council is working alongside local artist, Simon Whalley, on a community art project called Create to Connect. The project will focus on the sharing of how involvement in art and all things creative is helping people cope with the Covid-19 pandemic. The culmination of the project will be the development of an online showcase of the creative work individuals have been involved with over the last few months.

Local Artist, Simon Whalley, said: “The arts have been at the forefront in helping individuals and communities cope with the current crisis. The Covid-19 virus has affected us all and will continue to do so. The aim of the projects is to encourage creativity, share what people do, connect and re-energise Eden.

“We would love individuals, local groups and organisations alike to join the project, it is truly open to all. We’d like individuals, local groups and organisations to share what you have been doing creatively to connect and tell us what you are looking to do in the next three months. We will then create an online platform to share this work. We are looking for work in all media forms, images; videos, sound-files and summaries of ongoing work (200 words max). If needed we may be able to help with taking photographs for you.”

The project reflects a national initiative led by the Arts Council called Create to Connect, which demonstrates a range of resources being produced every day through May. Those interested in the Eden based project may find the resources useful to refer to when developing submissions with information found at the following link:

Leader of Eden District Council, Cllr. Virginia Taylor, said: “A lot of people have responded to the lockdown by making pictures and art  ‘installations’ – posting Tik Tok dances, family acts, paintings on their phones, dressing up and playing music outside. We want that to happen even more and for people to share things together. It isn’t about being ‘good at art’ - having ideas and making things happen makes people feel good - and connecting with others doing their thing makes everyone feel even better. Please join in the Big Eden Create to Connect!”

The project is running from the 18th of May until the 31st of August and Eden District Council is setting aside a small budget which can be accessed to help develop creative ideas.

In the first instance please respond by email to simon@simonwhalley with how you would like to be part of Create to Connect - Eden and whether you require funding to help with your ideas.  The maximum grant is £500. A submission page will soon be developed on an online platform along with a simple form to complete.
