Suspension of upholstered domestic seating bulky collection and recycling services

Due to short-notice implementation of new legislation relating to waste containing certain types of polluting materials, from 1 January 2023 upholstered domestic seating can no longer be sent to landfill for disposal.

While Cumbria County Council’s Household Waste Recycling Centres make the necessary arrangements to manage this change, they will be unable to accept such material between 1 January and 23 January.

This affects disposal of:

  • Sofas and armchairs
  • Sofa beds and futons
  • Kitchen and dining room chairs
  • Stools and foot stools
  • Home office chairs
  • Bean bags, floor and sofa cushions

Cumbria County Council recognises that this will be disruptive for the public and apologise for the inconvenience this will cause. They are working hard with their contractors, partners and other agencies to improve the situation.

The changes to the law also affect bulky waste collection services managed by Eden District Council, meaning that the items listed above cannot be included for bulky waste collection. We will contact all those affected by this change as soon as possible to try to arrange collection of any prohibited items before 1 January. Bulky waste collections for items other than those listed above can still be booked through our customer service team on 01768 817817.

We apologise for any inconvenience caused by the suspension of this service. We will provide an update as soon as the situation changes.

In the meantime, we ask that you remain patient and respectfully remind Eden residents that fly tipping is a criminal offence under section 33 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 and that offenders can be given a £200 fixed penalty notice. Serious cases, resulting in court prosecutions, can lead to a fine of up to £50,000 or 12 months imprisonment.
