Council meets landowners to discuss Economic Masterplan

Invest in Eden Cumbria, the Lake District a natural choice for businessLocal landowners were invited to meet with Eden District Council representatives this week, to discuss how they can participate in the process to create a Masterplan for the District’s future economy.

The meeting was held at the George Hotel in Penrith and coincided with the initial consultation period on upgrading the A66’s with Transport for the North nearing its end.

Local landowners took the opportunity to ask Eden District Council’s Leader, Councillor Kevin Beaty, Council officers and a representative from Highways England questions and to discuss issues and opportunities for the District’s future.

Councillor Kevin Beaty said: “The upgrade of the A66 and the new £300 million Borderlands Growth deal gives Eden District a chance to consider options to grow the prosperity of the area. We have always sought to create higher paid jobs in the local economy and we are now seeing demand for businesses to grow and remain in the District which is excellent. There is likewise increasing demand for competition amongst house builders to provide differing styles of quality housing to meet growing local demand.

“It is important that local landowners are able to feed into the initial discussions, so they can along with other stakeholders become the architects of the District’s short and long-term future.

“Eden District has a unique history, the market town feeling of the local area is important and could be lost by any unsympathetic development. That’s why it’s important we have a Masterplan in place and stakeholders such as landowners are involved in its development. Then as Penrith grows to support the unique villages and towns of wider Eden, developers understand where and how we all would like to see the District develop to meet local and national needs.”
