Council celebrates awards for Excellence in Management of Address information
Eden District Council has been presented with the ‘Best in North West Region’ and a Gold Award in recognition of the management of its address information database.
The Awards were presented at the GeoPlace annual conference and presentation of the Exemplar Awards 2018 which took place last month at Edgbaston Cricket Club in Birmingham. The Awards were presented by Councillor Ian Ward, Leader of Birmingham City Council.
Improving public services and overcoming the challenges of data sharing is a key focus for councils. The Awards highlight best practice in local authorities using land and property and street information to tie different services from across the council together to give a ‘property level view of services'. Good data is critical in all of this. Without accurate, current and well-maintained data many of these challenges simply won't be solved.
The Awards highlight Custodians' roles within their authorities and enable their work to be more widely promoted to all parts of the authority. They allow the many services which currently use address and street data to see that the high standard of the data is externally recognised.
Local councils have a statutory requirement for street naming and numbering and are the source for the millions of address records of every residence and business in the UK. Addresses are invaluable to our economy and our public services. Addresses help make sure that emergency services get to our door as quickly as possible; addresses help confirm our identity; they help us to access products and services and high quality address data is fundamental for this.
The awards are testament to hard work and skill that goes into maintaining a constantly changing dataset.
The Gold Performance Award for Address Data is given to authorities that have consistently reached and maintained the very highest standard in national tests on data excellence, and supply of regular updates to the national hub which manages receipt of address data from all authorities in England and Wales.
In presenting the Award to Debbie Renwick Kerry Pearce, National Address Data Manager said: Eden District Council has achieved the highest standard of address information data management. Achieving this level demonstrates excellence and commitment to a process that brings local and national benefits.”
Notes to Editors
GeoPlace LLP is a public sector limited liability partnership between the Local Government Association (LGA) and Ordnance Survey.
GeoPlace is a world class expert in address and street information management, working internationally as well as in the UK to help our partners and customers maximise the value of their spatial information for better decision making.
GeoPlace maintains a national infrastructure that supports the address and street information needs of the public and private sectors. Its work relies heavily on close working relationships with every local authority in England and Wales. This relationship has been developed over 15 years, to build the National Address Gazetteer infrastructure and National Street Gazetteer. Ordnance Survey develops the range of AddressBase products from the National Address Gazetteer and OS MasterMap Highways Network from the NSG. Both datasets underpin efficient and effective services, bringing direct service delivery benefits to users.
The Unique Property Reference Number (UPRN) and the Unique Street Reference Number (USRN) are the unique identifiers for every addressable location and street in Great Britain. They are created by local authorities who have the statutory authority to name and number every street and property and Ordnance Survey who identify objects on the landscape which may otherwise not attract an address.
These unique reference numbers link datasets together and share information with other organisations who also use them. They provide a comprehensive, complete and consistent identifier throughout a property's life cycle – from planning permission or street naming through to demolition.
