Freedom of information request response - 06531
I write to obtain information into the number of toilets maintained by the local authority that have been closed in the last three years. Please provide to me, per financial year since 2016/17:
- How many toilets were under the authorities control
- How many toilets under the authorities control have been permanently closed
- The main reason for closures i.e persistent vandalism, cost cutting etc.
- None have been permanently closed
- Not applicable
Please note the Council is giving consideration to devolving some of its public toilets to Parish Council’s with transitional financial aid, and if the relevant Parish Council does not wish to accept responsibility for a particular toilet then further consideration will be given to their closure on 1st April 2022.
To date the Council has transferred 2 toilets to Parish Council’s – the public toilets at Shap and Market Arcade, Appleby have been transferred, but these have been retained as toilets (albeit with different opening hours) but not closed.
Additionally there are a further 3 toilets (Glenridding, Patterdale and Threlkeld) which are due to be transferred on 1st December 2019 and it understood that of these the toilets at Threlkeld will be permanently closed. So while this Council is not continuing to operate these 5 toilets, only 1 will be closed in the near future.
