Cumbria Wind Energy SPD

Eden District Council, Cumbria County Council and the local planning authorities in Allerdale, Carlisle, Copeland, South Lakeland and the Lake District National Park have produced guidance to help decide where wind farms might be built.

Why do we need guidance on wind farms?

Wind farms are becoming part of our landscape. Their numbers across Cumbria and the country have grown substantially over the last ten years. As the Government wants the UK to generate more of its energy from sustainable sources, to help reduce carbon dioxide emissions and combat climate change, the trend is likely to continue.

How has the guidance been produced?

Public consultation was carried out in Autumn 2006. We had a very positive response to this and 529 issues were raised by 151 organisations and individuals. The comments we received and the resulting changes made to the Supplementary Planning Documents (SPD) are summarised in the Statement of Consultation Responses document.

Adopting the SPD

The revised SPD was adopted by Allerdale, Copeland, Cumbria County, Eden, South Lakeland and the Lake District National Park Authority between September and December 2007. As part of the formal adoption process, Adoption Statements need to be published along with the SPD.

Where is the SPD available?

View and download the Adopted SPD and associated documents.

If you would like to purchase a copy of the adopted document (£15), or the associated documents (£5 each), please send a cheque, made payable to Westmorland and Furness Council, Planning Policy Section, Corney Square, Penrith CA11 7FG.

Paper copies of the documents are available in libraries at Alston, Appleby, Kirkby Stephen, Penrith and Shap. It is still possible to view the draft documents and comments received during the production of the Cumbria Wind Energy SPD. See the list of background documents for the SPD below.

Background documents for the Cumbria Wind Energy SPD

The following provides details of the draft documents and responses to them during the production of the Cumbria Wind Energy Supplementary Planning Document.

Production

Two stages of consultation were carried out in 2006.

A summary of the representations we received during preliminary consultation and how we have dealt with them is contained in the Statement of Consultation which can be downloaded below.

The full guidance document was consulted on from 30 October to 8 December 2006. The guidance came in three parts which made up the Cumbria Wind Energy Supplementary Planning Document - Consultation Draft. There was also a Sustainability Appraisal Report which set out how the guidance will help Cumbria become more sustainable.
