Planning for Gypsies and Travellers

The new planning framework aims to take account for the needs of all groups within society. Groups often not addressed are gypsy and travellers. New guidance placed on Local Authorities requires us to account for housing sites for Gypsies and Travellers in our emerging Local Plan.

In 2010, Eden's Core Strategy outlined how we aim to meet the needs of these groups, and a criteria for assessing sites is detailed in policy CS14 of the Core Strategy. This will be read alongside new guidance published by the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) in March 2012.

The Communities and Local Government Planning policy for traveller sites on GOV.UK requires that Local Authorities maintain a 5 year deliverable supply of residential pitches for gypsy and travellers. We will be allocating land as part of our Local Plan process. Progress made on this matter will be discussed in future Annual Monitoring Reports.
