Gritting and salting roads

Who is responsible for gritting?

The M6 and A66 are the responsibility of Highways England.

All other roads in Eden are the responsibility of Cumbria County Council.

When icy conditions are forecast, priority roads will be gritted by 8am whenever possible.

View a map of priority roads for gritting, on Cumbria County Council's website.

It is not usual to grit other roads, but if there is heavy snow, Cumbria Highways will aim to clear at least one route to each community, once priority roads are cleared.
