Gritting and salting roads

Who is responsible for gritting?

See roads managed by Highways England website who manage M6 and A66 in Eden.

See your roads in winter on the Cumbria County Council website for details of their winter road maintenance plan.

When icy conditions are forecast, priority roads will be gritted by 8am whenever possible.

View a map of priority route for gritting, on the Cumbria County Council website.

It is not usual to grit other roads, but if there is heavy snow, Cumbria Highways will aim to clear at least one route to each community, once priority roads are cleared.
