Deadline nears for £5,000 Property Flood Resilience Grant Applications

Property owners and businesses in Eden District who were affected by the December 2015 have until 31 March 2017 to apply for a £5,000 property level flood resilience grant to help alleviate the effects of any future flooding.

Eden District Council’s is administering the government’s Property Level Flood Resilience Grant Scheme locally. The grants of up to £5,000 can fund flood resilience measures such as raising electric sockets or replacing carpet with tiles/stone flooring, or resistance measures such as air brick covers etc. The grant is not for repairing or restoring your property to how it was.

The Council estimates that 425 domestic properties (households) were affected by the December 2015 floods in Eden and 108 businesses premises. So far, 433 applications have been received for the Property Level Flood Resilience Grant Scheme. 251 applications worth around £1,027,073 have been approved and £849,983 has been paid out for completed works.

Eden District Council’s Services Portfolio, Councillor Adrian Todd, said: “I would encourage anyone who has so far expressed an interest in the scheme to complete their application as soon as possible.

“Many people affected by flooding may be unsure about what resilience or resistance measures their property requires. Cumbria Action for Sustainability has produced an excellent free factsheet about refitting your home after flooding, this is available from the CAFS website. We also recommend using £500 of the Property Level Flood Resilience Grant for professional advice, like an independent flood survey to assess the way water gets into your property. This way people can be assured the money is being spent in the best way possible to help alleviate the impact of any future flooding.”

Applying for a Property Flood Resilience Grant

Using £500 of the grant towards professional advice such as an independent flood survey helps determine the best way to make your property flood resilient.

When applying to the scheme provide as much information as possible with your application, including photos where possible. Then explain how the measures proposed will help if flooding reoccurs. Providing a sketch plan for any measures such as additional drainage or outdoor works is very beneficial in helping to determine your application.

Once your application is submitted, it is checked against the scheme’s criteria. If the application is eligible and the measures proposed are approved, the Council will send out a formal agreement so works can start. The grant is paid on invoice/s being submitted to the Council. Payments have to be made to the property owner (not contractors) for auditing purposes. All payments need to be made by 30 September 2017.
