Calculation of council tax

The Council Tax you pay helps to fund the services of Eden District Council, Cumbria County Council and the Police and Crime Commissioner for Cumbria. The total funding requirement is:

Authority £'000
Eden District Council 3,838
Parish Councils 916
Cumbria County Council 25,774
The Police and Crime Commissioner for Cumbria 4,442
Collection fund requirement 34,970

To calculate Council Tax payable per property requires the tax base (the number of properties against which the tax can be collected) to be calculated. Every property in Eden has been valued by the Valuation Office. Once valued, properties are allocated one of the eight valuation bands (Bands A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H). Each band is multiplied by a given factor to bring it to the Band D equivalent. The total of the Band D equivalent is then multiplied by the declared collection rate, which for Eden is 99%, to give a Council Tax Base.

The tax base for Eden is 20,119.85

The total demand on tax payers (less Parish Precepts and Special Expenses) is £33,942,756. This is divided by the Tax Base to give the basic Band D tax of £1,687.03. Each valuation band is then calculated as a proportion of Band D as follows:
