Calculation of council tax

The Council Tax you pay helps to fund the services of Eden District Council, Cumbria County Council and the Police and Crime Commissioner for Cumbria. The total funding requirement is:

Authority £'000
Eden District Council 3,885
Parish Councils 1,027
Cumbria County Council 27,130
The Police and Crime Commissioner for Cumbria 4,740
Collection fund requirement 36,782

To calculate Council Tax payable per property requires the tax base (the number of properties against which the tax can be collected) to be calculated. The Valuation Office has valued every property in Eden. Once valued, properties are allocated one of the eight valuation bands (Bands A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H). We multiply each band by a given factor to bring it to the Band D equivalent. We multiply the total of the Band D equivalent by the declared collection rate, which for Eden is 99%, to give a Council Tax Base. The tax base for Eden is 20,365.64.

The total demand on tax payers (less Parish Precepts and Special Expenses) is £35,754,325. We divide this by the Tax Base to give the basic Band D tax of £1,755.62. We calculate each valuation band as a proportion of Band D as follows:
