Garden waste collection

In Eden, garden waste is collected from 17,571 households and as of April 2018 the recycling rate is 43.20%. Households are provided with a green wheelie bin and a calendar showing collection dates. To find out when your collection date is please visit My Eden. Bins are emptied fortnightly during spring and summer, and once a month during winter.

Garden waste wheelie bins need to be placed at the kerbside by 7am on the collection day.

What can I put in my garden waste bin?

You can put:

  • grass clippings;
  • plants;
  • flowers;
  • leaves;
  • hedge prunings;
  • twigs;
  • small branches;
  • real Christmas trees; and
  • weeds

into the bin. Please note that bins containing soil/compost will not be emptied. Soil and compost can be taken to Flusco HWRC.

How often will my garden waste bin be emptied?

Garden waste bins are emptied every two weeks between the months of March and November. They are emptied once a month from December to February. Only garden waste bins supplied by us should be placed at the kerbside for collection.

How will I know when to put my garden waste bin out for collection?

You will be supplied with a calendar telling you which day your bin will be emptied. If you have not got one, or have lost your calendar, copies of calendars can be found by entering your postcode into My Eden.

Can I have another garden waste bin?

Yes, if your bin has been stolen or damaged, we will supply another one free of charge and collect any damaged bins.

If you still have your original garden waste bin and need another one or two garden waste bins, you can buy extra bins for £45 each. Up to a maximum of three garden waste bins will be emptied as part of the garden waste collection scheme.

If your garden waste bin was set out to be emptied by 7am on the collection day shown on the recycling calendar, and was not emptied, please let us know.

What if I am not included in the garden waste collection scheme?

For some households in rural areas that are not included in the garden waste collection scheme, we can provide village garden waste skips. Garden waste can also be taken to the nearest household waste recycling centres at Flusco, or Kirkby Stephen.

Only new properties within an area already included in the collection scheme will be considered for the garden waste collection.

What if I am not able to move my garden waste bin myself?

Elderly or disabled people who have difficulty moving a garden waste wheelie bin to the kerbside can apply to have garden waste collected from outside their house.
