Lowther Manelli, the developer behind the Penrith News Squares project has announced today (1 August 2008) that Princes Street in Penrith will reopen in mid September following a decision to dismantle the facade of numbers 5,6, and 7. The original programme envisaged that Princes Street would not reopen until mid October.
At the outset of the development the condition of the buildings was unknown but it was suspected that they may be unstable. Princes Street has therefore been closed to allow engineers to assess their condition. The buildings have now been identified as potentially unstable but they are not a danger to shoppers or passers by.
Although the designers would prefer to have kept the original facade, this is now impossible and Contractors Thomas Armstrong will begin to dismantle the facade immediately.
Architects Manning Elliott will develop new designs to replace the frontage. These designs will be submitted for planning consent. It is estimated that this work to dismantled the buildings will take 5-6 weeks, enabling Princes Street to reopen in mid September
