Free Family Fun Day to Welcome 2012 Games

From Beijing to Penrith. As the world joins in on witnessing the official hand over of the Olympic flag to the British Olympic Committee at the end of the Beijing Olympics, residents of Eden are invited to take part in a our own Flag Raising Event on Sunday 24 August at Penrith Leisure Centre.

Supported by Parkwood Leisure and Eden District Council, everyone is invited to Penrith leisure centre to try their hand at a range of activities being staged there as part of the ‘Raise the Flag’ celebrations.

The list of activities is extensive with free admission kindly given by Parkwood Leisure on the basis that any donations received will be for Eden Valley Hospice.

Staged as a community day, there will be something for everyone from face painting, bouncy castles and a bucking bronco to salsa dancing. Agility can be tested by having a go on the climbing wall whilst flexibility can be maintained by trying the fitness classes. Sub Aqua will be organising a coached ‘Try It’ diving session, there will be giving a bowling demonstration which will be followed by a bowls taster session.

There will be dance workshops from Alison Horne; Climbing lessons; Cheer Leading demonstrations and if that wasn’t enough to whet your appetite the Euphoric Circus from Appleby will be giving a ‘Free-Run’ display that could really make your hair stand on end!  To check your pulse afterwards there will be a free health check running all day.

One of the highlights of the day will be the Penrith Triathlon 2008 in which individuals or teams of three can test their prowess at swimming, cycling and running. There will be prizes for leading men and women as well as the winning team. Entry forms can be obtained from Jeff Marshall at Eden District Council, tel: (01768) 817817.

The beneficiary of the day will be the Eden Valley Hospice and Joe Jigsaw the hospice mascot will be on hand during the morning to meet and greet children to the Centre. So far prizes for the day have been pledged by North Lakes Hotel, Parkwood Leisure, Center Parcs, the Shap Wells Hotel, Bells of Lazonby, and the Penrith Co-op with water for the Triathlon courtesy of Aqua Pura from Armathwaite.  Any business wanting to sponsor an event or donate a prize can phone Eden District Council Officer Sue Fell tel: (01768) 817817.

With such a busy day anticipated and to help in its smooth running, participants will need to express an interest in joining any of the Workshops and the ‘Try it’ diving session with Sub Aqua. To do so tel: (01768) 863450.

Events begin at 10am and a giant screen will be in the Leisure Centre Sports Hall so all can enjoy the spectacle of the raising of the Eden Olympic Flag at the moment the flag is presented to the British Olympic Committee in Beijing.

Programmes for the days events will be available shortly from Penrith Leisure Centre, local libraries and Tourist Information Centres.
