Racial Equality

Race Relations (Amendment) Act 2000 places a general duty on local authorities to promote race equality. Under the duty when the authority carries out its functions it must aim to:

  • Eliminate unlawful racial discrimination
  • Promote equality of opportunity and
  • Promote good relations between people of different racial groups

The duty's aim is to make race equality a central part of the way public authorities work, by putting it at the centre of policy making; service delivery; regulation and enforcement, and employment practice.

The Race Relations Scheme details how the authority intends to fulfil its duty under the Race Relations (Amendment) Act 2000.
