Can you tell me whether the land or premises next to my house
is Council owned?
Yes, provided the precise location of the land/
premises concerned can be accurately described (see below for
information we need in order to help you).
What if I want to know who owns private property?
Please contact the Land Registry on
www.landreg.gov.uk or 0191
301 3500 to obtain the relevant enquiry form. N.B the Land Registry
will be unable to assist you if it turns out that the land
concerned is unregistered, in which case you may wish to make
enquiries locally with neighbours. Alternatively, if the land is
subject to development proposals Eden District Council's Assistant
Director of Planning Services will be able to provide information
on recent planning
applications received.
What information do I need to give you before you can tell me
whether the Council owns a particular property or area of
land?
It is often difficult to accurately describe an
area of land over the telephone. As such enquiries are encouraged
in writing with an accompanying plan. Personal visits arranged in
advance can be given an immediate response. Should you be unable to
access a plan the Authority can send you an extract of the area in
question for you to mark up and return. No accuracy can be
guaranteed for telephone enquiries.
Is there a charge for this information?
Not at present. However, dependent upon the
future demand for this service, the Council may consider
introducing a charge to offset the administrative costs.
How long will it take you to find out the information I have
requested?
This will be dependent upon the level of detail
requested and the accuracy of the information supplied (in
particular the need for a detailed plan). Generally a written
response will be provided within 10 working days. Where this
timescale is likely to be exceeded you will be informed
accordingly.
