Penrith’s Olympic Torch Relay celebrations are taking shape with a BMX display team and a climbing wall being just some of the events and activities planned for the 20 June, when the town welcomes the Olympic Torch Relay’s arrival.
Ron Kenyon, Chair of Penrith Olympic Torch Relay Steering Group said: “This impetus for the Torch Relay coming to Penrith is really starting to build. With less than 100 days until the start of the Games in London, we have a programme of activities between 4:30pm-7pm on 20 June to make this an occasion to remember.
“A road closure is being planned so that the town centre can have a real buzz, with the BMX display team and climbing wall acting as just some of the activities people waiting for the Torch’s arrival can partake in. We will also have sports demonstrations from local clubs including Taekwondo and archery.
"We are still keen to hear from local sports club, community organisation or business, who would like to take part in the celebrations including a parade of sports clubs through the town.”
On Cornmarket stalls will also be provided for sports club or community groups to provide information about their activities to the public.
The next meeting of Penrith’s Olympic Torch Relay Steering Group is taking place at 7pm on Wednesday 25 April at the Frenchfield Sports Centre in Penrith. For more information email: penrithtorchrelay@gmail.com or contact the Leisure Services team at Eden District Council tel: 01768 817817.
