Penrith's first food festival launches this July!

Eden District Council with the support of the Vitality of Penrith Group, DEFRA and Rural Development Programme for England (RDPE) are hosting an event in which all the best food producers, suppliers and retailers across Eden are invited to join in. For the weekend 21-22 July, Penrith's town centre will come alive with wonderful smells, colour and activity.

Saturday 21 July, the event starter, will showcase an array of restaurants, cafes and takeaways as they come out on to the streets offering tasters and special offers for visitors. Music and street acts will keep guests entertained while they meander the towns many little alleys and snickets.

Sunday 22 July, the Main Course, features a local celebrity chef demonstration area where the likes of Peter Sidwell, Annette Gibbons and John Crouch prepare some delights for the crowd. Local chefs from various fine dining establishments have also been invited to take part. They all appreciate the wealth of wonderful food in the area and hope to inspire visitors with some recipe ideas.

Sunday will also play host to displays from Newton Rigg College and Penrith Show as they share where Eden's food comes from and how to find out more. Crafty Monkeys will be allowing the smaller visitors to show their creative side while Rheged supply great street food from their Silver Bullet food van! All this and so much more will be on offer throughout the weekend; for any age and any taste!

Eden District Council's Town Centres Office, Annabel Candler said: "Penrith on Plate will celebrate the fantastic food offer we have in our area from local producers to places to dine out, this is a real opportunity for local businesses to come together and showcase the very best that Eden has to offer over the 21/22 July.

"Penrith on a Plate is a project part financed by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development: Europe investing in rural areas, which is managed by DEFRA. The Council is working with local businesses and attractions to improve the vitality of the town centre by hosting more events."
