Household garden waste collections in Eden District are to resume today (17 July 2012), after the service was suspended temporarily for two weeks due to delays in the transfer of staff from former contractor Carlisle City Council to the new provider Cumbria Waste Recycling Limited.
Eden District Council’s Environment Portfolio Holder, Councillor Mike Tonkin, said: “I am pleased to announce that the garden waste collection service restarted today (17 July 2012). People should check their recycling calendars to see when their next collection date is. I would like to thank local residents for their patience and understanding as the Council has worked with all the parties concerned to rectify this situation as quickly as possible.
“The outstanding issue over the transfer of personnel has now been resolved, enabling Cumbria Waste Recycling Limited to recommence the service from 17 July. The delivery of refuse collection services is a specialised skill, involving the use of HGV vehicles with compacting equipment. It is always of paramount importance to ensure this equipment is used safely, especially when it is continuously stopping and starting in residential areas. It is essential that the requisite trained staff are in place before the garden waste service recommenced to ensure those operating it are delivering it to the highest standards.
“I would once again ask residents to be patient, as the new contractor settles into delivering the service and deals with a backlog of collections. Please remember to check your recycling calendar for the date of your next collection.”
