Eden District Council’s Executive last night (26 July) approved measures to parking in Penrith, to ease community concerns about road works for new retail developments affecting trade in the town.
The proposals include four fee free Fridays in August 2011 when parking in Council car parks and a new hourly parking charge of £1 in the Council’s Sandgate and Bluebell Lane Pay and Display car parks from 12 September 2011.
Councillor Mike Tonkin, Eden District Council’s Environment Portfolio Holder, said: “The Executive are keen to push these parking changes through as quickly as possible to help the local economy, as we have listened to the views of local traders about the impact the current road works are having on their businesses.
“Local businesses are already getting behind the free parking initiative with offers and incentives, for example The Wine House of Penrith are offering free wine tasting at their shop on Devonshire Street during the afternoon on each Friday in August. This is the kind of support we need from traders to show Penrith is open for business. To help promote the free parking Fridays in August, the Council is placing a banner in the town centre and making information available through our website and Tourist Information Centres. We also hope the new £1 hour parking charge being introduced into two of the Council’s car parks in Penrith from 12 September is also a welcome boost for the autumn period.”
The new hourly parking charge of £1 for the Council’s Sandgate and Bluebell Lane car parks comes into force from 12 September 2011.
The changes parking in agreed by Eden’s Executive are in addition to the:
-
All day free parking which is on offer during school holidays at the Queen Elizabeth Grammar School which the Council funds.
-
The free parking at the Penrith Rugby Club, which is being made by Sainsbury’s during the construction phase of the Penrith New Squares development.
Please note, these proposals do not affect the free limited time parking on-street which is available using a disc or the chargeable parking arrangements at the temporary car park at Southend Road, which is managed by a private company.
