People from Eden joined in the national programme of events to celebrate and recognise HM Armed Forces – past, present and future – as part of second Armed Forces Day being held on 26 June 2010.
A special flag raising event was held at Penrith Town Hall on 21 June at 10.30am to coincide with ceremonies taking place across the UK. The Armed Forces Day flag was raised by Eden District Council’s Chairman, Councillor Mrs Joan Raine and The Reverend John Oliver, President of the Penrith & District Branch of The Royal British Legion.
“The Council is delighted to be taking part in the celebrations for Armed Forces Day. We will proudly fly the flag at the Town Hall which symbolises the contribution the Armed Forces have and continue to make to Great Britain. We are delighted that members of the Royal British Legion and Eden Councillors who served in HM Armed Forces were able to join us to mark the occasion,” said Eden District Council’s Chairman, Councillor Mrs Joan Raine.
Armed Forces Day is an annual event, providing the nation with a dedicated day where people can come together to show their appreciation and support of the Armed Forces.
The Reverend John Oliver, President of Penrith and District Branch Royal British Legion said. “We of the Royal British Legion welcome this event which enables the folk of Eden Valley to express both gratitude to and admiration of the loyal and courageous service rendered by all members of the Armed Forces on whom we rely for the preservation of our freedoms. I hope that the flag will be a visible reminder of the sacrifices made by our servicemen.”
