Appleby in Westmorland

Appleby is one of the most picturesque market towns in Northern England, and as the County Town of Westmorland was granted a Royal Charter in 1174.

Set in a great loop of the River Eden and protected on the south side by the Norman Castle, Appleby is situated by the main east to west Roman road, and is steeped in history.

The tree-lined main street of Boroughgate lies at the heart of the town. At either end of the thoroughfare High and Low Crosses mark the original boundaries of the market. Appleby is renowned for its friendly atmosphere and visitors will find a warm welcome, along with a variety of delightful independent shops offering local crafts and specialities.

Take time to explore the beautiful Church of St Lawrence, containing one of the oldest surviving organs in the country or delve into the history of the Grammar School, attended by the half brothers of George Washington, first President of the USA. Peek into the peaceful courtyard of St Anne's Hospital where group of almhouses originally built for thirteen poor widows of the Castle Estate is still maintained by the trust endowed by Lady Anne Clifford.

Appleby Horse Fair

In June each year, the 300 year old Appleby Horse Fair takes place. This colourful gathering of travelling people from all over the country converges on the town to buy, sell and race horses and ponies.

Festivals

You can take part in other unique festivals, including the Rushbearing Services still held in the villages of Great Musgrave and Warcop, or the outstanding Jazz and Music Festival held every August.

Every Saturday, Market Square hosts a lively street market.
