Age Concern

Age Concern, Carlisle and Eden exists to promote the well-being of people over the age of 50 and help make later life a fulfilling and enjoyable experience.

We have a number of ways in which we do this:

Through our Promoting Independence Partnership Project we can put you in touch with a range of services to assist in continuing life at home and find social opportunities in the community for you. Your needs can be discussed with one of our coordinators who will suggest ways of dealing with the issues identified. These may include:

  • Information and advice on housing issues, aids and adaptations, problems with goods and service.
  • Help with filling in forms such as attendance allowance and other welfare benefit claims.
  • Advice and information on healthy living or clubs, social groups and leisure activities.
  • Home safety advice and practical help to reduce the risk of accidents.

Our Benefits Service will provide advice on the various benefits available. A member of staff is available to visit you to ascertain what is available for you, give advice and help you complete forms, prepare your case for tribunals and help you challenge decisions.

Through our Shopmobility Scheme in Eden we provide battery powered scooters and manual wheelchairs to help those with limited mobility to do their shopping and also explore the wide range of beautiful locations in Eden. They can be loaned from the Resources Centre, Sandgate, Penrith on a daily, weekly or monthly basis and some are based at holiday attractions, shops and other venues across Eden for use at that location.

We have Day Care Centres across Eden and Carlisle. These provide people, with limited health and social care needs, the opportunity to meet and be supported in a social setting. A hot two course midday lunch is provided along with a range of activities and the opportunity to enjoy the company of others and to chat. These are usually accessed via a referral from health or social care teams. Eden venues include: Alston, Appleby, Kirkby Stephen, Lazonby, Penrith, Shap, Tebay.

We run a number of Lunch Clubs which provide guests with the opportunity to enjoy a hot two course meal in the company of others. Eden venues include: Kirkby Stephen, Langwathby, Morland, Tebay, Penrith, Shap.

Our Home Day Care Scheme in Eden is a pioneering and innovative response to the needs of isolated older people. It involves a Volunteer Day Care Host opening up their home once a week or once a fortnight to three or four local people. Transport is provided and guests will enjoy a nutritious hot midday meal in a friendly caring atmosphere and stimulating activities. Venues include: Calthwaite, Appleby, Shap, Sleagill, Orton, Newbiggin, Penrith and Morland.

Through our Macmillan Community Solutions Project older people who are affected by cancer - such as living with cancer, caring for a loved one, friend or neighbour with cancer, or a survivor of cancer, can be supported. We can link you to existing services as well as developing new ones. We are working with Macmillan Cancer Support, Cumbria County Council and NHs to develop this project.

We hold a supply of aids and adaptations which can assist you with tasks that you may be experiencing difficulty with. These can be viewed and purchased from us.

A luxury accessible Self Catering Facility is available for rent for carers, staff and volunteers of the Caring profession. Its purpose is to benefit those in a daily caring role , providing a break in peace and tranquillity. Lowthwaite Lodge is situated at Thanet Well, Greystoke.

Age Concern Carlisle and Eden run numerous shops in each area to provide funds for the organisation to support older people in both localities. Items for sale are always appreciated.

Our main Resource Centre is based in Sandgate, Penrith and is open Monday to Friday from 9.30am - 12.30pm and 1pm - 4pm. Outside office hours we can be contacted via our 24 hour answerphone.

We also have bases in Carlisle, Alston, Shap, Appleby and Kirkby Stephen.
