Wildlife and Nature

Eden has many Natural Nature Reserves (NNR) and Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). Many are rich with wildlife and birds and plants and flowers:

  • Newton Reigny, near Penrith is a Site of Special Scientific Interest, (SSSI).

  • Augill Pasture, near Brough is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and a Special Area of Conservation (SAC).

  • Argill Woods, near Brough is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).

  • Waitby Greenriggs, near Kirkby Stephen is a local wildlife site.

  • Smardale Gill, near Kirkby Stephen is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and a National Nature Reserve (NNR). More information is available from both Cumbria Wildlife Trust and Natural England.

  • Tarn Sike, near Orton is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and a Special Area of Conservation (SAC).

There are several National Nature Reserves in Eden:

  • Cliburn Moss NNR, Cliburn, near Penrith has an unusual range of fen, bog and heath communities with several rare and scarce plant species. 

  • Great Asby Scar NNR contains some of the best examples of limestone pavement in Britain. 

  • Smardale Gill NNR is part of the disused Darlington to Tebay railway line.

  • Moor House NNR gives you the chance to see some spectacular geological formations, waterfalls and panoramic views.

  • Tarn Moss NNR is a basin mire supporting nutrient-poor fen. 

Woodlands

The Woodlands Trust website allows users to search for woods to visit via an interactive map. For more information please visit www.woodlandtrust.org.uk. This includes Dufton Ghyll Wood, one of the few remaining Northwest outposts for the native red squirrel and in spring time rich with bluebells and daffodils. 

Area Of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB)

The North Pennines is the second largest AONB and one of the most remote and unspoilt places in England. The North Pennines are also a European and Global Geopark.
