The gardens and castle at Lowther have laid abandoned for 70 years and opened in 2011 for the first time since 1938. Work has started to restore the castle ruins; convert the stables into restaurant, exhibition space and visitor facilities; and recover the gardens to a plan inspired by the late 17th century layout that remains in the gardens.
