Fishing

Cumbria has more fishing waters than any other county in England, and Eden offers many opportunities to enjoy this past time. Try your hand at fishing on the River Eden and its tributaries or on Lake Ullswater.

Where to fish in Eden:

River Eden Lower Reaches

Flowing south to north, and running from Armathwaite, through Wetheral and Carlisle, to the river's estuary on the Solway Firth.

River Eden - near Lazonby

Four and a half miles of salmon, with Wild Trout and Grayling.

River Eden Middle Reaches

From the Temple Sowerby area, just past Watersmeet (the point where the River Eamont meets the River Eden) to Armathwaite, through Temple Sowerby, Eden Lacy and Lazonby and running close to the market town of Penrith.

Eden Lacy 

Fishing comprises 1.8 miles of the left bank, with 12 named pools and a fishing hut set amongst a wooded and wild flower area opposite the renowned Lacy Caves.

Hornby Hall, Brougham

The lower end of the River Eamont is famous for the quality of the brown trout. There are two beats, one flows alongside the ancient church of Ninekirks and has several good pools. The other is at Udford which is wider and flows more slowly into the Eden. Day tickets available.

The Yorkshire Fly-Fishers' Club

Controls over 20 miles of fishing on the Rivers Eden and Eamont in Cumbria. Set in stunning picturesque countryside the beats on the upper, middle and lower Eden provide excellent and varied waters holding brown trout and grayling. The club does not issue day tickets. Limited membership opportunities are filled via a waiting list.

Flowing from the source of the river on Mallerstang Common, to Watersmeet, near Temple Sowerby, where the Rivers Eden and Eamont join.

Ullswater

The fishing is divided between the National Trust and private landowners. There is limited public access, so ensure that you have the landowners permission before going onto private land. Fish: Pike, Trout and Char.

Brothers Water (West Shore), Ullswater

Go Wild in Eden is a new initiative from Eden Rivers Trust that allows fishing on private stretches of rivers subject to the purchase of a token for each beat (and a rod licence). Beats are available along limited sections of the Eden and Lyvennet rivers, Hoff Beck, Trout Beck, Hilton Beck and Crowdundle Beck. Fishing tokens from Appleby Tourist Information Centre and Eden Rivers Trust.
