Footway and Street Lighting

We maintain the footway lighting for villages in Eden, also a small number of footway lights within Penrith, Appleby, Alston and Kirkby Stephen. We also look after any lighting on our land such as the lighting in our car parks, making a total of 1592.

Cumbria Highways maintain all roadway lighting and the footway lighting on the main roads in Penrith, Appleby, Alston and Kirkby Stephen. They also maintain the footway lighting on most new or recently built housing developments. You can easily tell if a light is maintained by Cumbria Highways as all their lights are identified by a four digit number attached to the lighting column for example 1234. You need to report problems with these lights to Cumbria Highways.

Lights that are privately owned

A very small number of lights within the district are privately owned. These lights are usually located on housing developments. Any new lights not meeting Cumbria Highways specifications for adoption, will continue to be privately owned and maintained.

Who do I contact if I want a new light

If you would like a new light you can ask either Cumbria Highways or your local parish council via your Parish Clerk.

We no longer provide or fund additional footway lighting. However, we are able to assist your local parish council with advice and quotations for the installation of any new footway lights that they are prepared to fund.
