Gritting and salting roads

Who is responsible for gritting?

M6 and A66 are the responsibility of the Highways Agency

All other roads are the responsibility of Cumbria Highways

When icy conditions are forecast priority roads will be gritted by 8am whenever possible.

It is not usual to grit other roads but if there is heavy snow Cumbria Highways will aim to clear at least one route to each community once priority roads are cleared.

To report a problem with a local road contact:

  • M6/A66 - Highways Agency on 0300 123 5000
  • All other roads - report online or ring Cumbria Highways Hotline 0845 609 6609
