This page details various issues that may stop
certain people being able to access information on the site and
various non-compliance with W3C accessibility guidelines. Whilst we
have tried to keep it as non-technical as possible it necessarily
contains a degree of technical terms
Mapping and GIS
Our GIS systems are currently not WCAG priority 2
compliant. In particular:
- The use of a mouse is necessary to specify a
point on the map.
- Javascript must be enabled to use the maps. This
approach has been preferred to the use of Java applets by the
software developers.
- Currently we make extensive use of colour to
highlight areas on the map. It is planned in the very near future
to supplement this with the use of patterns.
It is widely recognised that there are no truly
accessible GIS web interfaces in the mainstream marketplace. We
have extensively redesigned the public interface to our GIS systems
in an attempt to simplify them yet still retain a good degree of
functionality for those that require it. If you have problems
accessing data only available using our GIS system you can request
it in a more suitable format by emailing the GIS officer at
web.admin@eden.gov.uk
We are also aware of problems with the viewing of
our interactive maps using Opera 9. We have told our supplier about
this and are still awaiting a response
