Display of Advertisements

Policy BE23

Applications for consent to display advertisements will be permitted where the size of the sign and the materials to be used are appropriate to the location and will not have an adverse effect on either the visual amenity of the locality or on highway safety.

2.55 Within the limitations of the advertisement regulations, which grant deemed consent to display certain types of sign, the Council exercises careful control over the size and design of advertisements. This is particularly so in the rural parts of the District which are designated as an Area of Special Control for Advertisements and where the size of sign and lettering which may be displayed with deemed consent is restricted. In all areas efforts are made to limit the number and size of signs to a reasonable level and to ensure that the overall design used is appropriate to the surroundings. A careful choice can usually achieve the advertiser's desired objectives without causing undue detriment to the amenity of the area.
