The North Pennines AONB is one of Britain's most outstanding upland landscapes. The AONB Partnership with, and on behalf of the five local authority areas it covers, has produced the North Pennines AONB Building Design Guide SPD to stimulate high standards of design and conservation. It sets out detailed advice for those undertaking building development and maintenance works and will be used in the consideration of planning applications. The main threat to the AONB is from small-scale change that erodes the area's distinctiveness. The SPD was produced to address this loss of character.
How had the guidance been produced?
The five planning authorities within the North Pennines (Cumbria County Council, Durham County Council, Northumberland County Council, Eden District Council and Carlisle City Council) have collaborated with the North Pennines AONB Partnership in developing this SPD. It is intended that all five local planning authorities will adopt the document as a SPD or endorse it as Supplementary Guidance.
