The Cumbria and Lake District Joint Structure Plan was adopted in April 2006. It will be saved for 3 years from the date of its adoption unless it is replaced in whole or in part by policies in the Regional Spatial Strategy (once adopted). The Regional Spatial Strategy was revoked by the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government in July 2010, however it is currently the subject of a High Court Hearing to determine if this move was legal.
The Cumbria and Lake District Joint Structure Plan sets out policy for strategic planning issues of county-wide significance. These take the form of broad policy guidelines for the use of land and the protection of the environment. The document is written in general terms and does not deal with specific sites.
It is important that the public is aware of the Structure Plan because it provides a framework for more detailed policies dealing with particular problems that arise at the local level, such as the use of a specific site for a particular development. These policies are contained in Local Plans and emerging Local Development Frameworks produced by the individual District Councils.
