The Council will be providing a programme of sports activities for Children and Young People during the Summer Holidays under the successful banner of the Holiday Sports Programme.
Working in partnership with the Council's Leisure Management Contractor Parkwood Leisure the programme will offer a variety of sports and physical activity courses aimed to increase people's enjoyment of sport and increase levels of physical activity in a fun environment.
The Summer Holiday Programme will provide opportunities for participation in Penrith, Appleby, Alston and Threlkeld.
The Summer Holiday Programme has been extended to provide a host of new activities including Climbing, Expressions Pump Cardio Gym Sessions, Indoor Bowls and Expressions Stretch and Spin and for the first time will be providing opportunities in Threlkeld, working in partnership with the Cricket Club.
The Summer Holiday Programme is this year being supported in Alston by Barnardo's who manage the children's centre in the town. Barnardo’s have generously provided a subsidy for each participant taking part in a course being provided at Alston Primary School. They will also be providing transport free of charge from Nenthead to Alston.
The previously well attended courses of Multi Sport and Rackets are kept in the programme and the Council offers Pro Cricket Camps led by locally based overseas professionals. The Council are pleased to include in the programme opportunities for people to participate in Dance by providing a Fun Dance Workshop and Daring Contemporary Moves Workshop, both led by community dance worker Alison Horn.
The Summer Holiday Programme has been further extended to cater for a greater variety of age ranges. The Council with Parkwood Leisure are further offering an opportunity for young people to experience the fitness suite by taking part in a supervised cardio gym session and get active in the class environment by taking part in the Stretch and Spin session allowing participants to get moving on the Spinning bikes. Also available during the summer period will be Eden Active days led by Nigel Beaty which aim to promote sport, physical activity together with healthy eating advice.
The programme offers participants the opportunity to try out the Indoor Bowls hall and experienced coach Brian Warren will lead a programme of skills and modified exciting games on the bowls green.
Should learning to Swim or developing your swimming skills be your goal the programme is offering daily crash courses in the main pool and learner pool. Also participants enrolled on a Multi Sports activity will get a chance as part of the course to enjoy swimming on one of the Fun Sessions held in the pool.
A programme of activities will be provided in Appleby working in partnership with Appleby Cricket Club and activities hosted at the Appleby Sports Centre.
