Penrith Triathlon

The Penrith Triathlon is a BTF registered sprint event, now in its fourth year, staged on the edge of the Lake District on bank holiday Sunday 28 August by Eden District Council and Arragon's Cumbrian Tri Club.

Having been billed as a beginner's event in its first year, last year's third running saw the event attract 240 competitors ranging from absolute beginners to some high class athletes producing some extremely quick times. The course (particularly the undulating bike!) provides a challenge to all levels of athlete, or non-athlete in my case.

Entries have already been flowing in, with numbers approaching 100 already we're well on course to match last year's sell-out field!

The course comprises of:

  • 400m pool swim, started in waves.
  • 22km bike loop on open roads
  • 5km run on adjacent fields

The event will utilise chip timing, secure and numbered transition on an astro turf pitch with the route being comprehensively signed and marshaled at all corners and junctions.

As event organisers we aim to make this event the best it can possibly be with participant enjoyment the most important factor in the event as a whole. Each participant will receive a technical t-shirt, food and a goody bag upon completion of the course. There will also be prizes/trophies for the mens, womens, team and vet categories.

Entries are encouraged from participants of all abilities, particularly those new to the sport or fancying a challenge similar to, but more varied than, a half marathon. Those who've never taken part before shouldn't be put off by not being fully proficient in all 3 disciplines, everyone has (at least) one weak discipline, with times of 15-20 minutes for the 16 lengths of swimming common amongst previous participants.

However for those who don't feel up to the whole event there also a team relay competition which requires a team of three to complete one discipline each. So dust down the old bike from the garage and get a couple of mates from your office to get a team together, it's a great opportunity to raise funds for your favourite charity or get one over on the office next door, you never know, your boss may even pay for your team's entry!
