William S. Cowper: Paintings Drawings Prints

Painting and Drawings of William S Cowper

Paintings Drawings Prints exhibition is now running at Penrith and Eden Museum where it can be seen until 15 January 2008. It is the first time his work has been shown in this area. Portraiture, landscape and illustrative work are all represented along with sketchbooks and other drawings reflecting the artist's powers of imagination and observation in equal measure. His prints have been inspired by literary classics such as Beowulf, Don Quixote and The Divine Comedy. Born in Skelton near Penrith in 1936, William trained at Carlisle College of Art and later at the Royal College of Art where, in 1959, he won the J Milner Kite travelling scholarship. From 1961 to 1989 he taught in the department of the School of Art at Huddersfield Polytechnic. On retiring he returned to Penrith and continues drawing and painting.
