‘Penmanship Now

The Eden Valley Scribes, which was formed in 1996, has nine members who are all keen to promote, foster and educate in the art of Calligraphy and Lettering in The Eden Valley. The group meets in the United Reform Church Rooms, Lowther Street, Penrith on the second Saturday of each month between 10 am and 4pm, with the exception of July and August.

The meetings comprise external and in house workshops at which professional calligraphers attend and impart their knowledge on specialist themes. Recent workshops have included, Impetuous italics, Modern gothic, Lombardic versals, Embossing and Layout and design.

This is the third exhibition Eden Valley Scribes has held at Penrith and Eden Museum and the exhibits on display encompass some of these themes along with the use of leaf 24ct gold, lettering in the styles of Gothic, Uncial, Round hand and Italic and the widespread use of watercolour and gouache.

Additionally there are displays of hand made cards, small books and boxes along with layout and design required to be done in preparation for a final piece of work and a display of Calligraphers tools and papers including vellum which are suitable for use.

Monday to Saturday: 10am - 4pm.
The museum's opening hours are the same as Penrith Tourist Information Centre.
