Loans, donations and bequests

Want to donate, loan or leave material to your local museum or gallery? Here's how!

Penrith Museum welcomes donations which are relevant to its collections as set out in its collections policy. Broadly, this represents a wide range of material relating to the history art and culture of the area encompassed by Eden District Council. While it is always filling gaps and developing new fields it has to be selective not least to avoid duplication. Occasionally material is accepted and lent for the purposes of handling for educational purposes. However, the bulk of the holdings are preserved in a protective environment researched and catalogued to a high standard, and when appropriate conserved professionally. Other museums and organisations can borrow material for display purposes, provided that various criteria regarding security and insurance can be met. Where this is not possible it might be possible to copy material providing the museum holds the relevant rights to allow this. We will not normally borrow material except for display in a special temporary exhibition. Finally, the museum welcomes bequests but it reserves the right not to be bound by special conditions of acceptance exceeding the terms of reference pertaining to the collections already described or limiting or conflicting with the policies which it has officially adopted, or may do so at a later date. The museum may decline to accept material which is not considered to be suitable.
