Penrith and Eden Museum to reopen after major refurbishment
On 29 July, Council Chairman, Joan Raine, will formerly reopen the newly refurbished Penrith and Eden Museum. The refurbishment has resulted in increased high-quality space for temporary exhibitions and educational workshops, with improved lighting as well as the installation of an audiovisual projection system. Lakes Alive 2010 comes to Penrith on Sunday 1 August

Vintage Penrith 30 July – 6 August 2010

100 extra free parking spaces in Penrith for summer holiday period
Around 100 free additional parking spaces are being made available for visitors Penrith this summer after Eden District Council has signed an agreement with Queen Elizabeth Grammar School to use their 6th form students' car park (not the main school site) as a public car park from 30 July - 2 September 2010. Eden areas chosen to pilot Cameron's Big Society
Two areas in Eden District have been chosen to pilot Prime Minister's David Cameron's Big Society idea, which was launched this week in Liverpool. The Upper Eden and Heart of Eden Community Plans are been highlighted as examples of communities working together to improve local services and keep alive local amenities such as pubs and post offices. Council Leader's public surgeries for Eden residents
Council Leader Gordon Nicolson, has introduced public surgeries for local residents to come along and discuss problems and issues with him. The surgeries are being held monthly, the next one is on Tuesday 3 August from 11am-Noon in the Town Hall, Penrith. No appointment is necessary; members of the public can simply turn up at the Town Hall and ask to see the Council Leader. Penrith Triathlon 2010
Penrith Triathlon is taking place at Penrith Leisure Centre on Bank Holiday Sunday 29 August. Now in its third year the course will again be a 'sprint' format comprising:400m pool swim, 22km Cycle loop on open roads and 5km run route. Read more about the event and how to register as a competitor.
New guidelines for planning and design in the North Pennines AONB
The North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) Partnership is consulting the public on two draft documents - Building Design Guide and Planning Guidelines - for the area on behalf of its five partner local authorities. Eden District Council will consider adopting the documents as a Supplementary Planning Documents so that they can be used to guide development decisions in the AONB. Consultation ends on 31 July 2010 and any comments should be made direct to the AONB Partnership. Read more about the AONB's Building Design Guide and Planning Guidelines.
