RADAR and NKS Keys

The Royal Association for Disability & Rehabilitation, RADAR is a national charity which took a leading role in discussions with disability groups and local authorities to establish a National Key Scheme, NKS. NKS locks are used for public toilets which have special facilities for disabled people and are kept locked and require a NKS key to open them. The NKS key will permit 24 hour access to the WCs for disabled people when other WCs will be closed and will counter the damage by deliberate vandalism or more casual misuse of the WCs.

The Radar National Key Scheme (NKS) guide, a written guide to the 9,000 NKS toilets and local services throughout the UK.  Providers of toilets for disabled people fit Radar locks to keep their facilities in good condition. Over 25 years the Scheme has been adopted by 400+ local authorities and many transport, retail and leisure providers.

NKS keys are available from Local Authorities and Social Services administering the scheme. NKS keys can be obtained from the following Tourist Information Centres:

And the following outlets:

Visitors are recommended to obtain their own key.
