Recycling and Waste Minimisation

Recycling

Together with Eden Community Recycling we have established over 70 recycling centres across Eden for the collection of beverage cartons, books, cans, foil, glass bottles and jars, paper and card, plastics, textiles and engine oil for recycling. For further information on where to reduce, reuse, recycle and dispose fo your household waste see Eden Waste A-Z (PDF: 1.63Mb / 40 pages).

Village recycling centres are designed to provide a pleasant and unobtrusive local facility. Payments of £15 per tonne are made to groups who 'adopt' their village recycling centre, which involves keeping the site clean and tidy, reporting any problems and promoting the facility in the village.

Recycling Credits are paid to community groups and commercial organisations that recycle household waste collected in Eden. Recycling Credits are paid by Cumbria County Council on a "£ per tonne" basis. The value of the Recycling Credit is equivalent to the cost of disposing of one tonne of household waste at the landfill site at Flusco. Further details and application forms are available from the Recycling Officers.

Eden has ambitious statutory recycling targets to meet over the next few years, as required by the Government's National Waste Strategy 2000. The statutory target for 2003-2004 was 16% and the target for 2005-2006 is 24%. In 2004-2005 33% of Eden's household waste was recycled.

Why Recycle?

Throwing away things in our refuse sacks to be buried in landfill is a waste of valuable materials which can be used again and again to make new products. Recycling saves using virgin materials and destroying non-renewable resources. On top of this, all Council's have statutory recycling targets to meet and Eden's target for 2005-2006 was to recycle 24% of its household waste.

To help us reach this target a number of changes have taken place. In June 2005 we distributed an additional 2,500 garden waste bins across the district. We also leave garden waste skips over a weekend once a month in most of the villages not included on the kerbside garden waste scheme. In addition, improvements have been made to the kerbside Paper and Card Box Scheme and this service will be rolled out to a further 3,000 households in 2006-2007.

Some recycling schemes are run in Eden independently of the Council. These are provided by other organisations, including the popular recycling centres at B&Q and Morrison's which are the responsibility of Eden Community Recycling.
