Pest Control: Frequently Asked Questions

Pests

Fumigation - Are there any precautions I should take beforehand?
All pets, including hamsters, tropical fish and caged birds must be removed from the premises for approximately 3 hours. All unwrapped food, eg fruit, bread, etc, sugar bowls, milk jug, butter dish and so on must be stored in cupboards or the fridge. TV and other electrical equipment must be covered.

Fumigation - How soon can I re-enter the room afterwards?
Not for at least 3 hours. If householders suffer with breathing problems we would advise 4 hours to be on the safe side.

Fumigation - will the insecticide stain carpets and furniture?
No, it will not stain. Once the insecticide is dry it might leave a white residue which will dust off.

I do not like killing any form of animal. Can I ignore a rodent problem?
No. With the many diseases rats carry, it is not acceptable to allow rodents to multiply. All Councils have a statutory duty under the 1949 Prevention of Damage by Pest Act to control vermin within the Authority's area.

If my pet should gain access to any form of bait what should I do?
Take it to the Vet immediately. For further advice contact the Pest Control Officer who will be able to help you. If treatment has been carried out by our officer you will have been given a poison form which advises you what to do if your pet has eaten any poisons.

Is the poison harmful to pets and children?
Yes, if eaten directly. Do not handle, touch or remove poison. Leave it to the Officer to remove all bait.

Wasps - After treatment, when can I remove the nest?
Don't move it for at least a week.

Wasps - How long will the nest take to die after treatment?
Although the queen will be dead in about 15 minutes the nest can take anything between 2 and 3 hours to die completely.

Wasps - If the nest if left where it is, will it be used again next year?
A wasp nest is seasonal and will not be re-used.

Will my cat or dog be harmed if they eat a dead rodent?
No, we do not use secondary killer poisons. Your cat or dog would have to have eaten a substantial amount of dead vermin before being affected.

How much will pest control cost me?
See Pest Control Charges.
