Graves and Burial

Burial and grave details

Burial and grave details for all five of our cemeteries are kept at Penrith Cemetery.

Grave purchasing

Grave purchasing is not restricted to Eden residents and covers a period of 50 years.

Care of graves

Care of graves is left to relatives to remove floral tributes and wreaths. However, wreaths are removed after funerals and Christmas wreaths are removed in February. Any other tributes may be removed if they become damaged.

Woodland burial area

Woodland burial area at Penrith Cemetery is located at the northern part of the cemetery and offers a 'return to nature' for those who would like an alternative to a traditional lawn grave.

Cremation

Cremation is available at Carlisle, Lancaster and Workington, sorry we do not provide this service in Eden.

Interments

Interments need to be booked in advance so please give us two working days notice. They cannot take place on Good Friday, Christmas Day or public holidays, except in an emergency.

Purchased Graves

Graves sold with the Exclusive Rights of burial for a fifty year period. If after the expiry date the grave is still required by the family it may be re-purchased. The right to erect and maintain a memorial is included in the rights granted subject to the payment of the memorial erection fee. Unused purchased graves, no longer required for burials, may be sold back to the Council. For costs see fees and charges.

Public Graves

Rotation graves are available to those who do not want a private grave or wish to erect a memorial. This form of burial requires only the payment of the interment fee and is the least expensive form of full burial. Spaces for additional burials or the interment of ashes of related persons cannot be reserved. Rotation graves may be purchased at a later date if the family want to secure the grave for future use. For costs see fees and charges.

Baby and Infant Graves

In the Penrith Cemetery a dedicated area has been developed where babies and infants can be buried.

Small grave spaces are available in all the other cemeteries for the burial of babies stillborn and foetal remains and, if the grave is purchased, a memorial may be erected.
