Noise Complaints dealt with by the Council

Noise coming from items on the list below is dealt with by the Environmental Protection Team.

  • Commercial premises
  • Industrial premises
  • Domestic premises
  • Dogs
  • Construction sites
  • Fireworks
    Fireworks Regulations 2004 has made it an offence for anyone under the age of 18 to possess fireworks. The regulations also prohibit the use of fireworks at night (11pm 7am) in England and Wales, with extensions for the following festivals:
    • Until 1am following the first day of Chinese New Year
    • On November 5th until 12am
    • Until 1am on the day following Diwali day
    • Until 1am on the day following December 31st

Noise Complaints dealt with by Police

Noise coming from any of the items on this list below is enforced by the Police. Penalty for breach of curfew is up to £5000 fine and/or six months imprisonment.

Traffic

The Council is unable to deal with general traffic noise, but can take action for noise from:

  • car repairs,
  • car radios,
  • car alarms and
  • parked refrigeration vehicles

Aircraft

  • Military aircraft
    Any complaints about military aircraft should be addressed to:

    Give as many details as possible to aid identification of the offending aircraft.

Railways

The Council has no powers to deal with noise from the normal movement of trains, however, if noise from maintenance or other activities on the tracks are causing a problem, we may able to help.

Military Noise

  • Military aircraft see above
  • Noise from military activities, the Council has no powers to deal with such noise, but is aware that some parts of the district are covered by local agreements. Contact the Pollution Control Team for further information.
