Reducing Your Rubbish

Recycling Week Promotion

Although recycling is a good way to avoid landfill the best solution is not to produce the rubbish in the first place! We can all take some easy steps to make a difference. Try following some of the advice below to reduce the amount of rubbish and recycling you produce:

  • Buy less stuff!
  • Buy Second Hand
  • Say NO to packaging where possible
  • Buy quality goods when you can (they last longer)
  • Buy local - support your local economy
  • Avoid disposable items
  • Refill
  • Buy in bulk

Packaging

Avoid buying items which are wrapped in lots of packaging. Fruit and vegetable often have their own wrapping in the form of skin or peel; there is no need to put them in a tray, a plastic wrapper and a plastic bag.

Re-use

Plastic carrier bags can be used to line bins around the home with and old jam jars for storing nails or screws or in school for water in art classes. Use your imagination and it's amazing the uses you can find for things.
