Microchipping your dog

Thousands of dogs are lost each year and are never reunited with their owners. By microchipping your dog you will permanently link your dog to you. Our Community Wardens are now fully trained and offer this service to all Eden residents for a one off payment of £10.

How does it work?

Microchipping involves injecting a tiny chip, about the size of a grain of rice, into the scruff of your dog's neck. The microchip has its own unique code which is entered onto PetLog, a nationwide database, and linked to the owners details. If a stray dog is found anywhere within the UK it will be scanned, and if a microchip is present its code can be matched to the PetLog database and the owners successfully identified and the dog returned.

Where can I get my dog microchipped?

You can arrange a time for the Community Warden to travel to your home to carry out the procedure. Alternatively if a number of owners would like their dogs chipped in a similar area within the Eden District a 'chipping session' at a specific location could be organised.

Can I get my cat microchipped?

At present the Community Wardens can only microchip dogs. Your local veterinary surgery may be able to assist you in microchipping alternative pets, including cats.

What if my details change?

Owner details can be easily amended on the PetLog database. Details on how to do this are provided when your dog is microchipped.

My dog wears a collar and tag, why should it be microchipped as well?

By law, all dogs that are on the highway or in a public place must wear a collar with the name and address of the owner inscribed somewhere on it. Microchipping does not remove this requirement. Collars however can be maliciously removed or break and the tags can sometimes fall off and be lost. By microchipping your dog you can ensure you and your dogs details can always be identified.

How much does it cost?

The Council charges a one off payment of £10 which includes the microchip, injecting the chip and entry onto the PetLog database.
